Clinical overview

About contraceptive pill

The oral contraceptive pill is a highly reliable method of preventing pregnancy when taken correctly. It works primarily by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg each month, while also thickening the cervical mucus to make it difficult for sperm to reach an egg.

There are two main types of contraceptive pill. The choice between them depends on your medical history, age, and lifestyle factors. Our pharmacist-led service ensures that your chosen pill remains safe and appropriate for you, with regular blood pressure checks required for certain types.

Comparing your options

  • Combined Pill (e.g., Microgynon, Yasmin)

Contains both oestrogen and progestogen. Often results in lighter, more regular, and less painful periods. Not suitable for women with certain conditions, such as a history of blood clots or migraines with aura.

  • Mini Pill / Progestogen-Only Pill (e.g., Cerelle, Cerazette)

Contains only progestogen. Safe for women who cannot take oestrogen (e.g., those over 35 who smoke, or breastfeeding). Must be taken at the same time every day to remain effective.

Frequently asked questions

How does the repeat prescription service work?
Once you have an initial prescription (from your GP or our prescriber), you can set up a subscription. We will automatically review your profile, dispense your pill, and deliver it to your door before you run out.
What should I do if I miss a pill?
The advice depends on which pill you are taking and how many hours late you are. Generally, take the missed pill as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two in one day. Refer to the patient information leaflet or contact our pharmacy team for specific advice.
Does the pill protect against STIs?
No. The contraceptive pill only protects against pregnancy. You should use condoms to protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Will the pill make me gain weight?
Extensive clinical studies have not found a direct link between the contraceptive pill and long-term weight gain, though some women may experience temporary fluid retention when starting a new pill.
