Clinical overview

About weight loss

Sustainable weight loss often requires more than just willpower. For individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30, or over 27 with weight-related health conditions (such as pre-diabetes or high blood pressure), clinical intervention can provide necessary support.

GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of medication that mimic a naturally occurring hormone in the body. They work primarily by acting on the appetite centres in the brain to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, while also slowing the emptying of the stomach. When combined with a calorie-controlled diet and increased physical activity, these medications have been shown to produce significant, sustained weight loss.

At Blackrock Meds, our weight management service is clinically supervised. We require monthly check-ins to monitor your progress, manage any side effects, and adjust your dosage safely.

Comparing your options

  • Wegovy (Semaglutide)

Administered as a once-weekly injection. Gradually titrated up over several months to the maintenance dose to minimise gastrointestinal side effects.

  • Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

A newer treatment that acts on two hormone receptors (GLP-1 and GIP). Also a once-weekly injection; clinical trials have shown it to be highly effective for weight management.

Frequently asked questions

Am I eligible for GLP-1 treatments?
Eligibility is based on clinical guidelines. Generally, you must have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related comorbidity. Our consultation will assess your suitability.
How do I administer the injection?
The medications come in pre-filled, easy-to-use pens. They are injected subcutaneously (just under the skin), usually into the abdomen or thigh, once a week. We provide full instructions and support.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. These typically occur when starting the medication or increasing the dose, and usually settle over time.
How long will I need to take the medication?
Weight management is a long-term process. GLP-1 medications are designed for chronic weight management. If you stop taking the medication, it is common to regain the weight lost unless permanent lifestyle changes have been embedded.
