Travel health: what to pack abroad this summer

As the summer holidays approach, many of us are looking forward to a well-deserved break abroad. Whether you are heading to the sunny beaches of Spain or embarking on an adventurous trek in Southeast Asia, preparing a travel health kit is an essential step in your holiday planning. At Blackrock Meds, we often see patients who have left their health preparations to the last minute, which can lead to unnecessary stress. Taking the time to organise your travel essentials ensures that you are ready to handle minor ailments and can focus on enjoying your trip.

One of the most important considerations for Irish travellers is sun protection. Our skin types are often not accustomed to the intense UV rays found in popular holiday destinations. It is crucial to pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, ideally 30 or 50, and to apply it generously and frequently. Remember that sun damage can occur even on cloudy days, so make sun protection a daily habit while you are away. Additionally, packing after-sun lotion or aloe vera gel can provide soothing relief if you do happen to catch too much sun.

When it comes to managing minor illnesses, a well-stocked travel health kit can be a lifesaver. Over-the-counter essentials such as paracetamol or ibuprofen are vital for managing pain or unexpected fevers. Antihistamines are also highly recommended, as they can help alleviate symptoms of allergies or insect bites. For those prone to travel sickness, packing appropriate medication can make the journey much more comfortable. It is also wise to include a basic first aid kit with plasters, antiseptic wipes, and bandages to treat minor cuts and scrapes.

Pick up the essentials before you go. Shop pain relief and travel health

If your travels take you outside the European Union, you may need to consider additional health precautions. Antimalarial medications are a requirement for certain destinations, and it is important to note that these require a prescription in Ireland. Medications such as Malarone, Doxycycline, or Mefloquine must be prescribed by a doctor, so you should arrange a consultation well in advance of your departure. Furthermore, travel vaccinations are not free in Ireland, even if you hold a medical card, so you will need to budget for these essential preventative measures. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) provides excellent guidance on the specific requirements for different countries.

For those travelling within the EU, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is an absolute must-have. This card entitles you to state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the EU countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in that country. It is free to apply for and can save you a significant amount of money and hassle in the event of a medical emergency. However, it is important to remember that the EHIC is not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance, which you should also arrange before you travel.

Preparing for your holiday should be an exciting time, and taking care of your health needs is a key part of that preparation. By packing a thoughtful travel health kit and ensuring you have the necessary prescriptions and documentation, you can travel with peace of mind. If you have any questions about what to include in your kit or need advice on travel health, please do not hesitate to speak with your pharmacist.

Safe travels and enjoy your summer holiday! Best wishes, Aidan
